Toor Dal

One of the greatest revelations of Indian cuisine for me was how delicious their vegetarian dishes are! Full of accessible ingredients, these dishes also pack in the nutrition from healthy pulses and vegetables. Try this lentil dish that's a great accompaniment to any meal.

 

TOOR DAL

Serves 4-5

Prep Time: 10 min | Cook Time: 30 min


INGREDIENTS

  • 1.5 cups toor dal, washed clean

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon chilli powder

  • 1 large onion

  • 1 large tomato

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds

  • 2 dried red chilli

  • 3 tablespoons ghee

  • 2 teaspoons salt, adjusted to taste

  • Finely chopped coriander bunch

 


Pressure cook toor dal with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 4.5 cups of water for 3 whistles. Once done, remove and keep aside. 

Heat ghee in pressure cooker. Once hot, add the cumin seeds and dried red chilly and fry lightly. Add onion and slow cook until golden brown. Add tomato and slow cook until mushy

Add the boiled toor dal and mix well. Add salt to taste. Add water to get desired consistency and simmer for 10 mins.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
